Costa Rican - Cascara Tea

from 10.00

Cascara tea (i.e., coffee cherry tea) –

During our visit to Costa Rica we discovered a fantastic beverage made out of dried coffee cherries.

Simply put: coffee beans are actually coffee plant seeds found within each coffee cherry. As such, most coffee cherries are discarded or composted after the coffee bean(s) have been extracted from the cherries. Fortunately, we found a coffee mill that dehydrates the coffee cherries so that they can later be used as tea instead.

You may be wondering why you hadn’t heard of this before – oddly enough; this isn’t a new phenomenon – coffee cherry tea actually pre-dates roasted coffee.

The best part about coffee cherry tea is that each coffee cherry is said to contain twice as many antioxidants as a cranberry – in addition they contain a decent amount of caffeine (every part of the coffee plant does). Some people even prefer to eat the coffee cherries instead of steep them.

We generally brew our Cascara tea in a French-press -- the temperature and time do not matter as much as they do with our other teas; however we generally steep our tea for 5 minutes in 185-195 degree water.

*Tasting notes: pear, peach, cranberry, sweet syrup.
